Why We Do What We Do

Simply put, we think people matter.

Most of Haiti’s water sources are contaminated. Haiti’s water problem is wide spread, and there isn’t a person in country that isn’t affected by it in some way. We believe we can make a difference.

At the centre of everything we do we keep three things in focus – are we empowering people, are we improving life for the people we’re working with, and are the changes that are created through our work sustainable?

Improving.

We believe in doing what we do well. For us that means working not just efficiently, but also effectively. When we install a bio-sand filter we want to see it make a difference so you know your funds are being well spent, and so that families can trust it as an effective way of treating their water.

When families choose to purchase a filter we have an opportunity to walk along side them through our year long follow-up and education program in a way that can give them valuable tools to change their lives. Education is a key component to that lasting change. When we do follow-up visits we not only get to educate families in how to properly use the filter, but also teach them sanitation and hygiene principles that can make a long term difference.

Training other organizations to do what we do opens the door for communities all over Haiti to be improved through access to clean water. Teaching valuable job skills to our local employees give them so many more options for their future, as well as a means to have a stable income and provide for their families.

Empowering

We believe in giving people the freedom to choose to better their health rather than forcing a technology on them. Families who choose to buy a filter are doing so because they see the benefits and they truly want to use a bio-sand filter in their home. Parents will know they’ve made a decision to better the health of their family, something that builds up personal dignity.

We want to support communities. When people volunteer to act as a Community Promoter in their area we get really excited. These people want to do something to better the lives of their friends and neighbours. They get to take action. We have the opportunity to support them in that as they connect people who want a filter with our organization. They play a vital role as agents of change.

Empowering people results in healthier economies. Families who choose to use a bio-sand filter will see improved health. Fewer medical expenses mean there is more household income available to put towards food, school, and other daily expenses. Parents who are healthy can work and support their families. Healthy children can learn. A little goes a long way!

What we do is about so much more than just providing access to clean water.

Sustaining.

Our long term goal is to create change that will lead to a long term difference.

Providing bio-sand filters is just the first step. Education gets us one step closer. Job training? Another step closer. Community empowerment? One more step.

The biggest change will happen when families have become so used to using treated water in their homes that they refuse to drink anything that isn’t treated, and their children raise children who don’t know anything but having treated water in their homes.

By using a filtration system that is durable, and can be used for many years to come, we can help families move in that direction.

We believe in long term development, and we’re committed to being here to see that happen!

Empowering. Improving. Sustaining.
